In the midst of significant leadership changes and challenges at the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Blade Nzimande shed light on the measures being taken to address issues and maintain vital support for students.
The recent dismissal of NSFAS CEO Andile Nongogo, following a R47-billion payments scandal and serious irregularities, has added complexity to the organization’s operations. Officials disclosed to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts that Nongogo has been removed in light of the financial controversies.
Minister Nzimande acknowledged the gravity of the situation and expressed determination to navigate the challenges. “I am confident that by collaborating with the NSFAS Board, we will overcome the current challenges facing the scheme,” Nzimande affirmed in a recent interview.
Underscoring the necessity for robust oversight and management, Nzimande directed the NSFAS Board to closely monitor executive functions and ensure a thorough examination of the legal report. Transparency and engagement with stakeholders were highlighted as crucial elements to restore confidence in the organization.
Despite recent setbacks, Nzimande highlighted NSFAS’s remarkable growth since its inception in the early ’90s, evolving from supporting a few thousand students to aiding over a million students today. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing financial aid to students to enable access to higher education.
The interview also offered an opportunity for Nzimande to address broader challenges faced by students, including the unfortunate incident involving a UWC student allegedly stabbing his CPUT student wife. This incident underscores the importance of not only financial support but also ensuring the safety and well-being of students in the academic environment.
As NSFAS prepares to open applications for 2024 during the week of November 20, 2023, the Ministry is dedicated to addressing challenges systematically. The leadership changes signal a commitment to accountability and transparency, essential elements in restoring the integrity of NSFAS and ensuring its continued role in supporting students on their educational journeys.
