Step Aside, Rick. Morty’s Making the Rules Now

In the latest episode of Rick and Morty, “Rickfending Your Mort,” Morty takes center stage and asserts himself in a way we haven’t seen before. He’s no longer just Rick’s sidekick or hapless follower; he’s taking ownership of his own adventures and setting the boundaries for what he’s willing to experience.

The episode begins with Rick in a state of ennui, having defeated his ultimate enemy. He’s lost his purpose and is drifting aimlessly through life. It’s up to Morty to pull him out of this funk and get him back on track.

Morty proposes an “adventure audit,” a way to reevaluate what constitutes an adventure and what doesn’t. He’s tired of being dragged along on Rick’s crazy escapades without any say in the matter.

The audit takes an unexpected turn when they encounter The Observers, a group of ethereal beings who judge the merit of adventures. Morty finds himself defending his choices and arguing for the value of his own experiences.

For the first time, Morty is taking control of his own narrative. He’s not just letting Rick dictate the terms of their adventures; he’s actively shaping them.

This newfound assertiveness is a welcome change for Morty’s character. He’s no longer the timid, indecisive teenager we’re used to seeing. He’s growing up and finding his own voice.

Of course, Rick isn’t happy about Morty’s newfound independence. He’s used to being in charge, and he doesn’t like to relinquish control. But he’s also starting to realize that Morty is no longer just a kid. He’s a young man who is capable of making his own decisions.

The ending of the episode leaves things open-ended, but it’s clear that Morty is no longer going to be Rick’s puppet. He’s making his own rules now, and he’s got the receipts to prove it.

This is a significant moment in the evolution of Morty’s character, and it’s one that I’m excited to see play out in future episodes.
