The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched an investigation into an alarming rise in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia among children, particularly in northern China. This surge in cases has overwhelmed hospitals across the country, prompting the WHO to seek detailed information from Chinese authorities to better understand the scope and severity of the outbreak.

The National Health Commission (NHC) of China has acknowledged the escalating incidence of respiratory diseases, attributing it to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions and the resurgence of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. The NHC has emphasized the need for enhanced disease surveillance and strengthened healthcare capacity to effectively manage the influx of patients.

In response to media reports and ProMED alerts regarding clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China, WHO has activated the International Health Regulations mechanism to obtain comprehensive epidemiologic and clinical data, along with laboratory results. The organization has also requested additional information on the circulation of known pathogens and the current strain on healthcare systems.

WHO has strongly advised individuals in China to adopt preventive measures to minimize the risk of respiratory illness, including adhering to recommended vaccinations, practicing social distancing, staying home when ill, seeking medical attention promptly when necessary, wearing masks appropriately, ensuring adequate ventilation, and maintaining regular hand-washing practices.
