US VP Harris’s Response to Gaza Crisis: A Lack of Conviction?

In the midst of the escalating crisis in Gaza, Vice President Kamala Harris took to X to express her views. While acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself, she also noted the high number of innocent Palestinian casualties and urged Israel to do more to protect civilians. However, her statement raises questions about the depth of her commitment to resolving the crisis.

Israel has a right to defend itself. As Israel does so, it matters how.

Too many innocent Palestinians have been killed. As Israel pursues its military objectives in Gaza, we believe Israel must do more to protect innocent civilians. pic.twitter.com/2LRNGESU8N

                      — Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) December 3, 2023

Harris’s post, while seemingly balanced, fails to address the root causes of the conflict. It does not mention the Israeli occupation, the expansion of settlements, or the systemic discrimination against Palestinians. These are all factors that contribute to the ongoing violence and instability in the region.

Examining the Democratic Alliance’s Concerns on ANC’s Israel Decision

Moreover, Harris’s call for Israel to do more to protect civilians is vague and lacks concrete suggestions. What does “doing more” entail? Does it involve changing military tactics, holding individuals accountable for violations of international law, or perhaps reconsidering the blockade on Gaza that has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis?

The post also fails to acknowledge the power imbalance between Israel and Palestine. While Israel has a right to defend itself, it also has the means to do so, backed by advanced military technology and international support. The Palestinians, on the other hand, live under occupation and face severe restrictions on their basic rights and freedoms.

Harris’s statement, therefore, comes across as a token gesture, a nod to the suffering of Palestinians without a commitment to meaningful action. It reflects a common trend in U.S. foreign policy – expressing concern for human rights while failing to challenge the actions of strategic allies.

While Harris’s tweet may be seen as a step in the right direction, it falls short of the critical stance needed to address the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is a reminder that words, while important, are not enough. They must be backed by actions that reflect a genuine commitment to peace and justice.
